My End call button doesn't work, or the phone thinks I'm still on a call

A stuck call screen is cleared with a forced restart.

Sometimes the call screen gets stuck. You might notice:

  • The hang-up button does nothing

  • You can’t make calls because the phone thinks you’re on a call

  • After a call, the screen freezes or says the microphone is already in use

  • The phone won’t power off

The fix: force a restart

Hold down the End call (power) button for 30 to 60 seconds straight, without letting go, until the phone restarts.

This clears the stuck call, and the button should work normally again. It does not erase anything.

Using the Google Phone app?

The Google Phone app (Phone by Google) is not recommended on this phone. It can cause a stuck call screen, and the physical keypad doesn’t work with it. Use the pre-installed phone app instead: Settings → Apps & notifications → Default apps → Phone app.
