First, check which message you see:
“No SIM card” or the phone doesn’t read the SIM at all → follow the steps below.
0 bars, but no “No SIM” message → the SIM is being read. Follow My phone has no service instead.
Steps
Turn the phone off.
Take out the SIM tray with the small pin that came in the box. It sometimes needs a firm push.
Place the SIM with the gold chip facing up (visible), away from the tray. The plastic colored side lies on the tray.
Push the tray all the way in until it’s flush, then turn the phone on.
Try a different SIM (for example, a family member’s) to see whether the phone reads any SIM.
Other things that can cause this
Verizon-based carriers: if the SIM keeps switching between “detected” and “undetected” (about every 30 seconds), CDMA-less is probably off. See How do I set up my phone on Verizon or a Verizon-based carrier?
Old or wrong SIM: if your SIM is very old, or the carrier says it belongs to a different phone, ask your carrier for a new SIM.
A lock code you never set: this may be a SIM PIN from your carrier. Call your carrier.
If no SIM works at all
If the phone doesn’t read any SIM, even one that works in another phone, it may be a hardware problem. If your phone is within 180 days of purchase, you can file a warranty claim. See How do I file a warranty claim?
