How do I back up my phone before sending it in?

Save your contacts, texts, photos and chats before a repair, upgrade or fix.

We try hard to keep your data when we repair or upgrade a phone, but we can’t guarantee it. Some fixes, like the Verizon messaging fix, always erase everything. Please back up before you send your phone to us.

What to back up

What

How

Contacts

Use Google Contacts with sync turned on (Settings → Accounts → your Google account → Contacts sync), or export a contacts file.

Text messages

Use SMS Backup & Restore or another text-backup app, if it’s in your app store.

Photos and videos

Back up to Google Photos, or copy them to a computer with a USB cable (pull down the notification and choose File transfer).

WhatsApp chats

In WhatsApp: Settings → Chats → Chat backup.

After the phone comes back

  • Your app store stays the same. You’ll just download your apps again if they were erased.

  • Anything stored only on the phone that wasn’t backed up (texts, photos, WhatsApp chats, contacts that weren’t synced) may be gone.
